Standing in Solidarity with Comrades in the Struggle for Ceasefire in Gaza and Liberation of Palestine

In recent weeks, the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) and other organisations campaigning for the liberation of the Palestinian people have faced a grave infringement on their fundamental rights as peaceful activists. Comrades of our organization and beyond have been unjustly arrested by the authorities for highlighting the ongoing plight of the Palestinian people and the current genocide committed in Gaza by the Israeli Occupation forces. It is imperative that we lend our unwavering support to these brave individuals who are fighting for justice, human rights, and opposing the current genocide.

At the core of the SPSC's work lies a commitment to promoting human rights as an extension to the Palestinian struggle for freedom against Israel’s programme of ethnic cleansing and genocide in Palestine. Members of SPSC have long been engaged in raising awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people and advocating for their rights, including an end to the illegal occupation, the right to self-determination, and the current barbaric atrocities committed in Gaza by the Israeli Occupation forces.

Peaceful protest and grassroots activism have historically been catalysts for transformative change. Civil society has a vital role to play in challenging oppressive systems and promoting human rights. SPSC's members have consistently exemplified this through their non-violent protests, demonstrations, and educational initiatives. They act as advocates of dialogue and resistance to oppression, striving to spark constructive conversations and bridge divides.

The recent arrests of SPSC members and comrades in other organisations standing in solidarity with Palestine raise concerns about the shrinking space for dissent and the criminalization of peaceful activism. These actions not only deny individuals their basic rights to freedom of expression but also erode democratic principles that are integral to any just society. When those fighting for justice face repression, it is a clear indication of the necessity to stand up and speak out for their rights.

Democracy thrives when its citizens are free to voice their opinions, challenge the status quo, and participate actively in shaping their society. Imposing restrictions on peaceful activists sets a dangerous precedent, creating a chilling effect on freedom of expression and undermining those engaging in peaceful dissent. We must defend the rights of SPSC members and all activists who courageously advocate for justice and equality.

As a global community, we must uphold the values enshrined in international law. The rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and peaceful protest are protected by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Governments have an obligation to respect and protect these rights, not suppress them.

Now is the time to stand in solidarity with unlawfully arrested and harassed comrades in SPSC and all other organisations fighting for the freedom and justice for the Palestinian people. We call for the immediate dismissal of charges against those comrades and the recognition of their right to peaceful activism. Let us amplify their voices, share their stories, and highlight the importance of their work. By supporting SPSC, we affirm our commitment to justice, human rights, and a peaceful resolution for the Palestinian people.

The arrests of members of SPSC and other organisations campaigning for the liberation of Palestine signal a troubling restriction on democratic freedoms and the repression of those advocating for justice. Their peaceful activism serves as a testament to the power of collective action in the pursuit of a more just world. Let us rally together, call for solidarity with these activists, and foster an environment where dissent is celebrated, not silenced. In standing with the SPSC, we stand on the side of justice, solidarity, and a better future for all.
